Embarrassed about how long it has been since your last cleaning
Long gaps are one of the most common reasons people walk into Premier Family Dental for the first time, so whatever you are bracing for, the team has seen it before. Nobody will ask why you waited, and nobody will lecture you about it.
Your visit starts with a conversation, not an exam. You tell the hygienist how long it has been and what worries you, and the cleaning is paced around that. If one visit is not enough to catch up, you hear it plainly, with the reason on the screen beside you, before anything else is scheduled.
Worried the cleaning is going to hurt
Before anything starts, you and the hygienist agree on a hand signal. Raise it and the work stops, every time, and you never have to explain why. Each treatment room has a flatscreen TV if you would rather watch something than stare at the ceiling.
If nerves are the bigger problem, ask about sedation when you schedule. Nitrous, oral and IV sedation are all available in this office, and Dr. Khalil holds a conscious sedation license, which few general dentists in Ohio have. Fear does not have to be the reason you wait. How each option works is explained on the sedation dentistry page.
Not knowing what actually happens during a dental cleaning
Here is how a cleaning visit goes, so nothing catches you off guard. First, you and the hygienist talk about how long it has been and what worries you. Next, the hygienist checks the gum around each tooth, removes the hardened buildup your toothbrush cannot reach, then polishes and flosses. Digital X-rays are taken when they are due, not at every visit by default. Finally, the dentist examines your teeth, checks for anything unusual, and goes over what was found with you on the screen beside your chair. A first visit after a long gap may take longer, and if it needs a second visit, you hear why before anything is scheduled.
Getting talked into a deep cleaning you are not sure you need
This is the worry people bring up most after a bad experience somewhere else. Premier Family Dental is independent and doctor-owned, so there is no corporate quota riding on what the hygienist finds. If you do show signs of gum disease, you see the proof on screen before anything else is discussed. A deep cleaning is only the right call when the measurements show gum disease below the gumline, usually gum pockets of 4 millimeters or more that bleed, or bone loss visible on the X-ray. You see those numbers on the screen before a deep cleaning is ever discussed. More on how gum care works here is on the dental hygiene page.
Catching problems while a small filling can still fix them
A cleaning here is also a careful look. Digital X-rays use far less radiation than old film. A Diagnodent scanner picks up decay before anyone could see it, while a small filling is still enough. Oral cancer screening is done with an Identafi 3000, built to spot trouble before it causes pain.
The intraoral camera puts clear pictures on the screen next to you, so you see exactly what the hygienist sees. If something does need work, it moves to dental treatment with the findings ordered by what is urgent and what can wait.
Getting the whole family’s teeth cleaned in one place
Kids, parents and grandparents can all be seen by the same team in the same building on High Street, so one trip can cover the whole household. Children get extra patience and a pick from the treasure chest on the way out. Adults with dentures or partials are looked after here too.
For kids, the cleaning is where fluoride treatments and sealants come in. Wadsworth adds fluoride to its city well water, bringing it to roughly 0.8 to 1.2 milligrams per liter, which helps. If your family is on a private well instead, tell the hygienist so your child’s fluoride plan fits the water you actually drink.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Most people do well with a cleaning every six months. If you are catching up after a long gap or your gums need closer watching, the hygienist may suggest a shorter interval for a while and show you why on the screen. The office is open Monday through Thursday, so booking your next visit before you leave makes it easier to keep.
Do you take my dental insurance?
Premier Family Dental is in-network with most PPO plans and files your claims for you. Bring your insurance card to each visit so your record stays current. If your cleaning turns up anything beyond routine care, you get a written, itemized estimate with your insurance applied before anything is scheduled.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of traditional film, which is why the practice uses them. They are considered safe enough to use during pregnancy when they are needed. You also see the images on the screen beside you, so you know exactly what they are being used to check.
Can you clean my kids' teeth too?
Yes. Children are seen by the same team as the rest of the family, often on the same trip. Their cleanings include fluoride treatments and sealants when they help, and a prize from the treasure chest at the end. If your family drinks well water rather than Wadsworth city water, mention it so the hygienist can factor that into your child's fluoride plan.
Will you pressure me into more treatment after my cleaning?
No. Premier Family Dental is independent and doctor-owned, so there are no corporate targets for how much treatment gets recommended. Anything found is shown to you on the screen and ordered by what is urgent and what can wait. Nothing is started on the spot, you get a written estimate first, and choosing to do nothing today is always an option.
